Chhaava (2025) Movie Watch Online Movierulz5, In reference to the life of Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the second ruler of so called Maratha Confederacy, Chhaava (lit. transl. Lion’s cub) is a 2025 Indian Hindi-language Semi historical action film written by Vicky Kaustal. It is an adaptation of the Marathi novel Chhava by Shivaji Sawant. Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, the film also features Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna.

Chhavaa (2025) Release Date

Pre-production in April 2023 and the shoot started in October 2023 and finished in May 2024. A. R. Rahman is scoring the music and soundtrack album; Irshad Kamil and Kshitij Patwardhan pen the lyrics. It was theatrally released in regular and IMAX formats on February 14, 2025. It has grossed more than ₹205 crore (US$24 million) in its first four days to become the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2025.

Plot

After the demise of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, word reaches the court of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. His advisors predict the fall of Maratha resistance, but Aurangzeb, though aware of the defeat of a great foe, commands a celebration. But power has already shifted to Sambhaji, the son of Shivaji. Burhanpur, a crucial Mughal administrative and economic hub, faces an unexpected Maratha attack. The unprepared defenders are overwhelmed by the attack. In the heat of battle, Sambhaji is thrown into a pit where he meets a lion. Subduing the animal, he kills it bare-handed. The Marathas capture the Mughal treasury in a direct challenge to imperial power.

As news arrive in Delhi, Aurangzeb understands that the Maratha resistance still intact. He launches a major military assault to crush them. Meanwhile, Sambhaji is joyously welcomed home by his wife, Yesubai, while factional intrigue brews within the Maratha court, with conspirators attempting to install Rajaram, Sambhaji’s step-brother, as ruler. Aurangzeb’s army approach, and the horrors done under his command are briefly recounted. Diplomatic talks follow as Mughal prince Mirza Akbar asks Sambhaji to join him in a rebellion against Aurangzeb. Though suspicious, Sambhaji discovers secret letters between his stepmother Soyarabai and the prince. The plot to depose him is revealed, and the conspirators are put to death under the weight of an elephant. Sambhaji, perceiving the Mughal forces’ superior numbers, employs hit-and-run guerrilla warfare. The Deccan’s rugged landscape proves disastrous for the Mughals, with enormous losses.

Aurangzeb, having promised to stay uncrowned until Sambhaji is defeated, faces increasing hardship. His daughter, Zinat-un-Nissa, seeks to capture her estranged brother Mirza Akbar, but the Marathas stop the ambush. Internal discontent undermines Sambhaji’s ranks when jagirdars (feudal lords) desert to the Mughals, compelling him to call a royal council. Meanwhile, his dissatisfied brothers-in-law divulge his whereabouts, leading to a Mughal ambush. As many warriors fall, crucial Maratha leaders Santaji Ghorpade and Dhanaji Jadhav are smuggled out to continue the resistance, while an outnumbered Sambhaji fights till his capture. Taken before Aurangzeb, he refuses to submit. He is cruelly tormented yet does not surrender his ideals. Aurangzeb, facing rising revolts, gives him a chance to submit. Sambhaji remains defiant, stating that the movement for Swaraj (‘self-governance’) has spread across the empire. As he perishes, Rajaram ascends, and the resistance continues. The film finishes with the Marathas’ eventual triumph, as the Mughal Empire crumbles within three decades, leading to the foundation of Indian Swaraj.
